44 Modern Sugarcane Nurseries to Open, Opening Doors of Progress for Farmers and Youth

The Bihar government has taken a historic decision to take the state’s agricultural landscape, and particularly the sugar industry, to new heights. For the first time in the state, 44 state-of-the-art sugarcane nurseries are being established. This initiative will not only improve the quality of sugarcane production but also create new employment opportunities in rural areas.

Scope and Objectives of the Project

Under the 'special plan' prepared by the Sugarcane Industries Department of the Bihar government, 44 nurseries will be established across various districts of the state. The objective is to provide farmers with improved, disease-free, and high-yielding sugarcane seedlings.

Plant Target: 5 lakh improved sugarcane seedlings will be prepared in each nursery annually.

Total Capacity: A total of 2.20 crore high-quality seedlings will be produced and distributed to farmers through these 44 nurseries.

Participation: These nurseries are being developed on a PPP (Public-Private Partnership) mode, ensuring better coordination between government oversight and private sector efficiency.

'Single Bud' Technique: A Technological Shift in Farming

This project is set to completely transform traditional farming methods. The government is promoting the 'Single Bud' technique in these nurseries.

Seed Savings: While traditional farming requires 30–35 quintals of sugarcane pieces per acre, this modern technique requires only 5 to 7 quintals of seeds per acre.

Time Savings: Farmers will be able to take ready-made seedlings from the nursery and plant them directly, saving them the initial 1 to 2 months typically required for the crop to develop.

Disease Resistance: Seedlings prepared in these nurseries are resistant to major diseases like 'Red Rot.' This is expected to reduce crop wastage by approximately 50%.

 Application Process and Subsidies

The government has initiated the application process to ensure the success of this ambitious scheme. For those looking to enter this business, this is a golden opportunity.

Eligible Applicants: Interested farmers, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), Jeevika groups, private entrepreneurs, sugar mills, and jaggery producers can apply.

Government Support: The government will provide subsidies for establishing these nurseries. Interested applicants must apply through the department's official website or the District Sugarcane Office.

 Economic Benefits for Bihar

Currently, sugarcane is cultivated on approximately 2.21 lakh hectares in Bihar. The government is also working towards opening 25 new sugar mills in the state. The opening of these sugarcane nurseries will lead to the following economic benefits:

Expansion of Area: Nurseries will be opened not only in existing sugar mill zones but also in areas where sugarcane cultivation is currently low, providing farmers with a viable alternative crop.

Increase in Sugar Recovery: The use of improved varieties will have a direct impact on the 'Sugar Recovery Rate' of mills, improving the financial health of the mills and ensuring better prices for farmers.

 New Employment Opportunities

This scheme is not limited to agriculture alone; it will also become a major hub for rural employment:

Direct Employment: Rural youth will find direct employment in the management, maintenance, and distribution of nursery plants.

Entrepreneurship: By becoming local entrepreneurs, farmers and youth can become part of the sugarcane seedling supply chain, which will serve as a new and stable source of income.

This move by the Bihar government is a concrete effort toward re-establishing the state as a 'Sugarcane Hub.' This convergence of technology and farming will not only realize the dream of doubling farmers' income but also make Bihar's rural economy self-reliant. For the youth and farmers looking for innovation in the agricultural sector, this is an excellent opportunity.
