Escapee from Delhi’s Saket Court Arrested in Bihar; Delhi Police Grants Transit Remand

In a dramatic turn of events, a notorious mobile thief named Uday Mandal, who had escaped from police custody inside Delhi’s Saket Court, has been apprehended in the Bhagalpur district of Bihar. A special team from the Delhi Police, led by a Sub-Inspector, arrived in Bhagalpur to complete the legal formalities and has successfully obtained a transit remand from the local Railway Court. The Delhi Police team has departed for the national capital with the fugitive under tight security.

Case Details and the High-Tech Police Trap:

The Dramatic Escape: Uday Mandal was initially arrested in South Delhi with ten stolen mobile phones. During a court hearing at the Saket Court complex, he managed to dodge the security personnel and fled from the premises.

A Single Mistake Led to Arrest: To evade the Delhi Police, Mandal boarded the Brahmaputra Express train heading towards Bihar. During the journey, he borrowed a mobile phone from a co-passenger to call an associate in Delhi, stating, "I have escaped police custody and I am on the train."

Traced via Surveillance: The Delhi Police had already placed the phone numbers of his known associates under electronic surveillance. The moment Mandal made the call, the cyber cell immediately traced the real-time location and identified the co-passenger's phone number.

The Co-Passenger's Prompt Action and Apprehension

The Delhi Police immediately called back on the co-passenger's number, alerting him that the person using his phone was a fleeing criminal. Displaying immense presence of mind, the co-passenger discreetly informed the Government Railway Police (GRP) escort party present on the train.

As the train pulled into the Sultanganj Station in Bhagalpur, Mandal made a desperate attempt to run, but the alert GRP and local railway police cordoned off the area and nabbed him.

When a suspect is arrested by the police of one state within the territory of another state, they must produce the individual before a local magistrate to seek temporary custody and permission to transport the accused back to the state where the crime was registered. This temporary legal permission is called a Transit Remand.
