Patna : June 18, 2026

PATNA: In a major relief for millions of homeless and underprivileged families in Bihar, their dream of owning a permanent house is closer to reality. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Central Government to grant final approval to provide benefits under the 'Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin' (PMAY-G) to 60 lakh verified eligible poor families across the state.

This significant update emerged during a high-level review meeting held on Wednesday at the Sankalp Hall (Lok Sevak Awas) between Union Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.

60 Lakh Families Found Eligible Out of 1.04 Crore

Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary stated that under the new phase of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PM Awas 2.0), the Bihar government had initially identified 1.04 crore families during a state-wide survey. Following a rigorous verification process based on the strict criteria set by the Central Government, 60 lakh families were found fully eligible and qualified for the scheme.

The Chief Minister stated:

"We have requested the Prime Minister and the Union Minister to expedite the approval for these 60 lakh poor families so that the underprivileged in Bihar can get their rightful permanent shelter in the new financial year."

Pending MNREGA and Housing Funds to be Released

During the meeting, key agreements were reached between the Central and State governments regarding rural development. Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan assured that all pending dues for Bihar under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), amounting to over ₹4 crore, will be cleared by the Centre before June 30, 2026. Additionally, financial bottlenecks delaying the completion of houses from previous phases are being resolved.

Other Major Decisions for Farmers and Rural Development:

Apart from housing, several key announcements were made to boost the state's rural economy:

Centers of Excellence: To ensure fair prices for farmers' produce, Centers of Excellence for tomato and onion will be set up in Buxar and Lakhisarai districts.

Global Market Integration: New policies will be implemented to connect Bihar’s specialized fruits and agricultural products to international markets.

Lakhpati Didi Campaign: The campaign to empower 'Jeevika Didis' (women self-help groups) will be accelerated. Bihar currently leads the nation with over 48 lakh Lakhpati Didis.

The high-level meeting was attended by State Agriculture Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha, Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit, Principal Secretary of the Rural Development Department Pankaj Kumar, and other senior officials from both the Central and State governments. The process of transferring the first installment of the housing fund into the accounts of these 60 lakh families will begin as soon as the final nod from the Centre is received.
