2,000 TB Patients Identified in Purnia During a 100-Day Intensive Campaign

Purnia: A major milestone has been achieved in Purnia district under the 'TB-Free India' (TB Mukt Bharat) campaign, initiated through a joint effort by the health department and the district administration. The 100-day intensive campaign, which commenced on World TB Day (March 24), has concluded with significant success for the health department. During this period, health workers conducted door-to-door surveys, resulting in the identification of 2,000 new tuberculosis (TB) patients in the district.

Objective and Background of the Campaign

Tuberculosis remains a serious health challenge for India. With the objective of realizing the Government of India's vision of a 'TB-Free India,' the Purnia health department launched this special 100-day campaign. The primary goal was to bring those TB patients into the mainstream who had previously remained deprived of screening and treatment.

Campaign Duration: 100 days (effective from March 24).

Goal: To identify active TB cases and bring them under immediate treatment (DOTS).

Methodology: ASHA workers, ANMs, and health department teams conducted door-to-door screening of potential patients in villages and urban neighborhoods.

The 100-Day Action Plan: How Was the Goal Achieved?

Health officials in Purnia explained that a three-tier strategy was at work behind this success. Identifying patients was not enough; linking them to treatment was the greater challenge.

1. Active Case Finding (Door-to-Door Screening)

Health department teams focused specifically on areas with high population density. Lists were prepared for individuals exhibiting symptoms like coughing, fever, and weight loss, and their sputum samples were collected for testing.

2. Utilization of Technology and Labs

Testing facilities were upgraded at all Primary Health Centers (PHCs) and the District Hospital in Purnia. Precise and rapid testing was ensured through CB-NAAT and TrueNat machines, which significantly reduced the turnaround time for reports.

3. Public Awareness Campaign

Starting from March 24 (World TB Day), misconceptions regarding TB were addressed through street plays (nukkad nataks), public announcements, and health camps. People were educated that TB is fully curable and that treatment is provided completely free of cost at government hospitals.

Treatment and the 'Nikshay Poshan Yojana'

All 2,000 identified patients have been registered on the 'Nikshay' portal. Purnia health officials highlighted the benefits being provided to patients under the TB-Free India campaign:

Free Medication: Patients are being provided with all necessary medicines free of cost until the completion of their course.

Nikshay Poshan Yojana: During the treatment period, financial assistance of ₹500 per month is being transferred directly to the patients' bank accounts to support their nutritional needs.

Counseling: Special counseling sessions are being conducted to eliminate the fear and social stigma associated with TB.

Challenges and the Way Forward

At the conclusion of the campaign, the health department highlighted the challenges faced by field teams. In many areas, social hesitation regarding TB still exists, causing people to avoid screenings.

"Identifying 2,000 patients is a significant achievement, but our true victory will come when all these patients complete their course. Dropping out of treatment midway is the most dangerous, as it increases the risk of drug-resistant TB." — District Health Officer, Purnia

Future Strategy:

Follow-up Team: A special follow-up team has been formed for these 2,000 patients to ensure that no patient discontinues their medication.

Support from TB Champions: Patients who have successfully defeated TB are being engaged to inspire others.

Continuous Monitoring: Screening processes will continue as a standard procedure even after the completion of this campaign

The 100-day TB-Free campaign in Purnia district serves as an example for society. It proves that when administrative willpower and the commitment of the health department align, any epidemic can be brought under control. The timely identification of 2,000 patients will not only save their lives but also help protect society by breaking the chain of infection. Purnia has set a model for other districts in Bihar in the field of public health.
